The variety of benefits available to businesses hiring veterans in NY State are significant! From the NYS Job Bank to multiple tax benefit programs, hiring veterans saves a great deal of money for businesses. Our discussion will cover who veterans are; the struggles and barriers they face regarding employment; the traits many veterans possess that seamlessly transfer to civilian positions; and what we can do to help assist in making a smoother transition for veterans into the workplace.

Mr. Vaughan is a Local Veterans’ Employment Representative (LVER) with the NYS Department of Labor. His specific area covers Chemung, Schuyler, and Steuben counties in New York. He is a U.S. Air Force veteran.

Robert Shannon has a number of years working with the veteran population regarding employment, education, and training needs. 2007-2012 Robert was employed with the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry as a Disabled Veterans Outreach Program Specialist assisting veterans of Pennsylvania with their employment journey. Mr. Shannon while was working for the PA Department of Labor and Industry was awarded the 2010 National Economic Commissions Annual National Employment Service Award for work done to ensure the economic well-being of the veterans of Pennsylvania. Mr. Shannon then went on in 2012 to work for the Department of Veterans Affairs as a Vocational Rehabilitation Specialist at the Bath VA Medical Center responsible for coordinating its Incentive Therapy Program, as well as general vocational services with primary focuses in Employment, Education, and Time/Leisure management.
